Front Page Comparisons Of News Papers

In  my magazine and feature writing class we are doing an exercise where we evaluate and compare the newsworthiness of the front pages of different newspapers.

With the help of the website Newseum, I was able to select major newspapers from different states in America. My selection consist of The New York Times, The Washington Post, and The Post and Courier

The front page of The New York Times features a prominent image of a wild fire occurring in Alaska. Other Than that the front page features six different stories.

The most prominent is the story about the amazon being ablaze, with headline titles that quotes," Ferocious Fire Scorch Terrain as Earth Heats." The story on this image is on the left side of the page unlike The Post and Courier.

Above the fold, features four stories. The two underneath the prominent image is " U.K. Leaders Move to Suspend Parliament to Advance Brexit" and " Italy's Enemy-of-My-Enemy Deal Sidelines Hard-Right Nationalists.

The front page is rounded out with the story of an artist who preserved a portrait of Mao Zedong year after year.

The Front Page of The Washington Post features three stories above the fold. One of the stories has a prominent image which headlines " Austin Joins Rights Battles of urban Homelessness". Like The Post and Courier, The Washington Post has the story underneath the prominent image.

The other two stories above the fold are " Drastic Move toward Brexit" and " Now at Your Front Door More Eyes For Police."

Beneath the fold features a story of D.C sports betting a company with no staff.

Like The New York Times, the front page  of The Washington Post is rounded out with the story of a dog park dividing the rich and powerful on the right hand side of the paper.

The front page of The Post and Courier features a prominent image  with bold headlines about the revitalization of crime area Spruill Avenue.

Above that though features a story about the county jail gaining more inmates. The headline of this story is bolded which shows that it holds a higher level of importance on the front page.

Unlike The New York Times Front page, The Post and Courier's front page's prominent image has it's story underneath it.

The front page ends with the College fo Charleston professor's tweet causing an uproar in society and backlash for him.

My Summer

Hello, my name is Arabia Green and I am from Charleston, South Carolina. I attend South Carolina State University. I am a second semester Junior majoring in mass communications with a focus in Journalism. I am also 21-years-old. I spent my summer working at Dodge's Chicken and spending time with my family. My free time was almost non-existent since I was working so much. When I was lucky enough to get a days off my family and I went Jacksonville Beach, Florida.

Our experience wasn't that great, being that we stayed in a vacation house with obnoxious vacationers living beneath us. The getaway from home and work was still pleasant enough to appreciate the vacation. My friend and I also went to Folly Beach over the summer.

It is always relaxing to come to this beach. Everyone is so peaceful and friendly. We even saw a several jelly fishes wash ashore. Overall my summer wasn't that great and I demand a redo but I guess I'll have to wait till I finish this year of college.
